Are We Good Parents? A (Brutally) Honest Assessment by the Experts

I officially need to improve as a mom. A lot. A LOT. On a scale from one to ten, my son gave me a solid five. And no, he didn’t want to reconsider.

I don’t think he will have a career in diplomacy.

What we can do better as parents

For one, he wants me to yell less (okay, I agree to that). And what looks like the German version of “cocaine” on the form is actually meant to say “cooking” – another field where my son sees potential for improvement for both his parents (but honestly, my love, there are only SO many ways to cook plain pasta!!).

Cocaine. Not approved by the kids.

What really doesn’t come as a surprise is that I’m the stricter parent. I AM really happy to learn, however, that my son actually enjoys my (oh so many) hugs.

All in all, the experiment of having our kids do an end-of-the-year assessment turned out to be very enlightening (and in my case, humbling). The kids were able to critique us and make suggestions; or, as my daughter did, just randomly color in some circles (she gave me a three, which – no, no way she did that deliberately…or did she?).

Our year-end performance review for parents is ready for you to download as a PDF right here. Just print one per child, fill it out with them and store the result until the next year. Then fill out a new form. And laugh at the previous one.

I am staying positive: Next year, I shall attempt at least a seven. Or an eight, even. What are you aiming for?

The assessment form and its categories were inspired by the German post “So beurteilen mich meine Kinder” by Nadia Meier in “Mamablog” by the Swiss newspaper Tagesanzeiger. Her kids awarded her 9 out of 10 points. Good for her! *clenching teeth*
